As medical devices become more sophisticated our understanding of the interaction between our “synthetic” world and human physiology continues to grow. The need to insulate the body from the devices we are inserting into it has created a whole new field of science. In some cases this research has created new device opportunities.

Coatings are now possible which:

  • add lubricity to the device enabling improved minimally invasive procedures

    Plasma Based Coatings

    NTTF Coatings GmbH is the provider for analysis, development, production and consultation in the whole subject of surface technology. Furthermore, we are highly experienced in the development and production of medical devices for diagnostics and therapy.

    Our company is located in the “Technologiezentrum für Oberflächentechnik” (TZO) in Rheinbreitbach. Within the thin-film-technology park, we found a perfect home because additionally to our own technical equipment we have access to further modern laboratory, measurement and coating facilities. The cooperation with university research institutions assures a regular influx of ideas.

    Our operational team consists of highly qualified scientists, engineers and technicians from different natural scientific disciplines such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology and pharmacology as well as the engineering disciplines such as mechanics, electronics and IT, who are able to transfer their knowledge of basic research directly into excellent products which are state-of-the-art.

    Each employee is specialized in their sub-area and possesses a long experience in their discipline. This experience gets multiplied by cooperation, because we are a well-rehearsed team.

    Antibiofilm – Biofunctional Coating

    Cardient® FMC is a biocompatible and biofunctional coating especially developed for medical and biological applications.

    The coating is an amorphous carbon coating with a quasi diamond-like structure, particularly suitable for flexible polymer-based medical implants. Implants that are coated with Cardient® FMC remain neutral towards cells and other living microorganisms. The implants can be populated excellently with somatic cells and are incorporated into the body quickly. At the same time, because of the low interdependency between surface and biomolecules, adhesion forces are reduced in a way that the population of biomolecules on implants in e.g. tube-like structures of the body is decreased.

    Materials that can be coated are polymer materials as well as highly temperature sensitive materials.

    Application areas are catheters, stents and sensors. One of the best known applications of Cardient® FMC is the coating of urological stents. Here it creates a smooth, encrustation-free surface on the implant and increases patient comfort.

    Hydrophilic-Hydrophobic Coating

    It is made of an amorphous carbon coating which has been doped with various precursors in order to adjust the contact angle with water or oil for example. In addition the doping can be modified to provide anchor points for molecules such as drugs.

    Application areas are microfluidic systems and urological and vascular catheters.

    Materials that can be coated are polymer materials, metals, ceramics and highly temperature sensitive materials.

    Super hard Coating

    The Cardient® superhard coating is produced in a PECVD process.

    Cardient® superhard has been especially developed for applications where functionality is lost after even small amount of wear.

    The coating is made up of amorphous carbon with a close diamond-like structure and density. Like all carbon based coatings, the surface is highly biocompatible and is therefore suitable for medical applications.

    Application areas include medical cutting tools such as scalpels, trephine as well as micro-structured surfaces.

    Materials that can be coated are metals, ceramics and special plastics as well as temperature sensitive materials such as hardened steel.

    Self cleaning Coating

    With low pressure plasma the self cleaning Cardient® TiX coating is created.

    Cardient® TiX is a super-crystalline titanium oxide which remains photo-catalytic for several hours when exposed to UV light, leading to a decoupling of hydrogen and break down of organic bonds. The released hydrogen kills bacteria and germs – the surface becomes germfree. If the coating is additionally made hydrophilic it is also very easy to clean.

    The released hydrogen radicals attack bacteria and germs – the surface becomes germfree. When Cardient® TiX is additionally adjusted to be hydrophilic, the surface can be cleaned easily with water.

    Cardient® TiX surfaces are:

    • selfcleaning
    • antibacterial
    • antifouling
    • antifogging

    Application areas include diagnostic surfaces, optical devices and bone implants.

    Wear-resistant Coating

    The extreme surface density of the so-called Cardient® resist is created via a series of magnetic and high frequency fields.

    Cardient® resist is a corrosion-resistant, chemically inert metallic layered coating based on carbon. The main characteristic is its extreme hardness plus a very good wear resistance coupled with unusual tribological properties. Another great advantage is that contaminationand wear materials do not adhere to the surface.

    Application areas include cutting tools, easily smeared tooling like e.g. milling tools for aluminium, copper, polymers and optical surfaces as well as applications demonstrating high cutting friction like e.g. valves, cam shafts and bearings.

    Low-friction Coating

    The extreme surface density of the so-called Cardient® resist is created via a series of magnetic and high frequency fields.

    Cardient® tribo is a coating with extremely low friction values. At the same time wear is reduced dramatically due to the extreme hardness.

    The high hardness is caused by the ion bombardment (forging) during the build-up of the layers. The parameters are optimized so that low-friction is combined with a high wear resistance.

    Materials that can be coated are metals, ceramics and special plastics as well as temperature sensitive materials such as hardened steel.

    Application areas include motor parts such as piston rings, valve components, big-end bearings, cam-followers as well as gear parts and bearings.

    Parylene Coating

    Parylene is applied in its gaseous phase in a vacuum and is completely pore-free. Almost every substrate material, e.g. plastics, ceramics, metals and alloys, glass and paper, can be coated with Parylene. The Parylene coating process evenly coats tricky surfaces and structures such as sharp edges, undercuts and small gaps that cannot be coated by using liquid based processes. In addition to this, in one operation process a coating thickness from 0,1 to 50µm can be applied.

    The application areas are very diverse: Parylene is used in the medical, automotive and aerospace industry. Moreover, Parylene is excellently suited for the coating of electronic devices like PCBs as well as for corrosion protection for products such as rare-earth magnets.

    • transparent (depending on thickness of coating)
    • excellent protection against corrosion
